SVS UserReset
Monday, 02 February 2009

On systems used by different users such as public labs or kiosks, for each user that logs into the system with SVS layers active, in each layer a new copy of the user templates is copied from the read-only sublayer into the writable sublayer under a unique folder for that user. As the number of these folders grows, the SVS filter driver starts to suffer a performance impact keeping track of them all. The easiest way to remove these extra folders is to simply reset the layers. However, some people would like to remove them without completely resetting the layer. Introducing UserReset tool.

Thursday, 29 January 2009

Ever run into a layer that you just couldn't export, delete, or maybe even reset without an error? There can be a few different causes, such as a file in the layer being locked. But there is one very consistent, reproducible, and easily avoided cause that I've identified -- our old friend Dr. Watson.

I work at a two year College. Before every semester I reimage all of the computers the students will be using. This semester I decided to jump feet first into software virtualization. That's right, almost every piece of software on the computer into a virtual layer. We are talking between 15 and 25 layers.

What's the difference between Activate and "Start layer automatically"?
Thursday, 12 June 2008

Q:
Lincoln asked, "we have OnPostActivate events in our layers, but they never run unless you manually de-activate and then re-activate the layers. All of our layers are set to start automatically. Shouldn't the OnPostActivate events run when SVS starts the layer during windows boot-up?"

Thursday, 12 June 2008

In Part 4 of this Best Practices series I will discuss Exclusions.

When you start using SVS and virtualise, for example, Office 2003, you will encounter a very common problem. After creating or editing documents, you stop working and your pc.
