As we planned our SVS agent roll-out it became clear to us that no end user should have the SVS admin console on their machine. That being said we need to get our staff familiar with the SVS and the admin console by having them install it on their machine and test. This article covers a basic overview of that process for our Helpdesk team.
I've recently had a few people message me about Global Excludes in SVS. The specific problem they seem to be having is if they exported a layer, the Global Excludes don't export. To help people that want to be able to do this I've written a quick tool that will help in the process.

As with any application, sometimes SVS layers need to be 'reinstalled' or updated. Of course, with SVS this is done by resetting a layer, or deleting the layer and importing a new one. When you perform either of these actions, you generally lose all of the personal settings configured on the layer before it is reset or deleted and re-imported.

It’s the time of year again when Symantec migrates (south, not Vista) to Las Vegas for our renowned ManageFusion user conference. In North America we will do it again in October in Orlando as well. The core technology in SVS is known inside Symantec as "Fortress". The Fortress file system filter driver -- fslx.sys -- is the traffic cop that controls interaction between the operating system and applications in SVS virtual layers.
In the interest of simplicity, Fortress is architected to leverage and extend native Windows functionality wherever possible. This approach ensures that virtualizing an application has the minimal possible impact on the appearance, behavior and supportability of that app. For example, fslx.sys maintains the barrier between the real and the virtual by tracking Windows process trees -- keeping things in order the same way that windows itself does.
